" Urban Rehabilitation of Pasaje´s Port, San Sebastian. Development of a Performing Arts Studyo"

URBAN PLANNING

In San Sabastián, North of Spain, there is an important port called Pasaia.
Pasaia serves as a worldwide exchanger of merchandise and berth for local fishing fleet.
The Spanish government, aiming to renew, expand, ease accessibility and increase the Port´s attractiveness and uses, called for proposals. This pinpointed Pasaia and its surroundings in the map.
Main challenge in this appealing urban rehabilitation project consisted in reintegrating such a big platform in its context, balancing the difference between sea level and the main road connecting Pasaia Port with San Sebastian.

To achieve this, I proposed the development of multidisciplinary public areas, which are connected by a tram to the near by villages. Those areas are conceived for people from all age ranges, and include different uses such as residential, leisure, sportive, academic… so the platform is used all day long.

The urban strategy is proposed in the approach to the sea and adjacent urban areas by adding new uses and public facilities that serve as focal points for an immediate environment.

The poject is situated in a broken area. There is no connection between the adjacent villages of the port with the port itself. A topographycal barrier separate these villages in adition, there is a freeway and a train rail that make this problem harder to be solved.

My proposal focuses in the construction of a Performing Arts School. The architecture of the building aims to transport people from the highest part of Pasaia to the sea platform trough walkways which arrive to the last floor of the building, being this public use one.

ARCHITECTURE

The idea is to design a polyvalent building in which it will be posible to perform all subjects related to drama indrustry due to the creation of a great variety of areas. Those diaphanous rooms will be very useful if in the future, new requirements have to be met.
The building intends to enhance conditions of public space while not standing in the way to the sea. Therefore construction rises from ground level, pretending it does not stand in a cement pillars forest. Six concrete frames, composed of big concrete pillars and Vierendeel beams, every 100 ft support the weight of the building.   These concrete pillars are the only contact with the ground. The Vierendeel beams support the 4 slabs creating a hanged structure, that has been designed in order to get the inner space as much diaphanous as possible, that is why such a reticular scheme formed by Vierendeel beams frames is needed.
